We just wrapped up an incredible 5 weeks travelling across Japan — exploring its history, soaking up its nature, and experiencing its culture in the most unforgettable ways. 🇯🇵✨

Here are our personal pros and cons of Japan:

PROS 🌸
• Incredibly safe — one of the safest countries to explore, even late at night.
• Super clean + organized — almost no garbage or graffiti, and everything just works.
• Amazing food — street snacks, sushi, wagyu, noodles, even convenience-store meals.
• Efficient transportation — fast, reliable trains once you learn the system.
• Stunning nature — mountains, lakes, coastlines, onsens… endless beauty.
• Rich culture + history — shrines, temples, festivals, craftsmanship everywhere.
• Friendly locals — polite, warm, and helpful, even with language gaps.
• Convenience stores are elite — 7/11, Lawson, Family Mart… fresh meals, drinks, even $5 wine that puts North America to shame. You’ll go way more than you expect!
• Washrooms everywhere — clean and easy to find.

CONS ⚠️
• Cash still needed — cards aren’t accepted everywhere, especially in small eateries.
• Language barrier — menus, signs, and conversations often need Google Translate.
• Crowds — major sights can get very packed.
• Smaller accommodations — rooms + bathrooms can feel tiny but are usually spotless.
• Transportation complexity — many train lines and passes can feel overwhelming at first.
• Cover/seat charges common in restaurants/bars — but no tipping, and they often include a small appetizer.
• Some small, traditional spots may limit or decline foreign guests — usually to protect their atmosphere and because of language or dining-custom challenges, not unfriendliness.
• Outdoor eating/drinking is limited — patios are surprisingly rare in many areas.

Nikko, tucked into the mountains of Tochigi Prefecture, instantly reminded us of a cozy little ski town — crisp alpine air, towering cedar forests, and layers of sacred history all blending together.

Just when we thought we were officially shrined out, we walked into Toshogu Shrine… and wow. The city’s crown jewel. A lavish, intricately decorated masterpiece dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu. All that gold leaf and those vibrant carvings — it’s hard to believe this was created in the 1600s. Absolutely stunning.

And then there’s Lake Chuzenji. 🤍 High in the mountains at the base of Mt. Nantai, it feels like its own little world. The shoreline is wrapped in forests and dotted with trails, and spending the day wandering around it was honestly perfect.

Next up: back to Tokyo… then home to celebrate the holidays with family and friends. 🎄✨

Okay — today was all about the monkeys! 🐒💛 We could watch animals up close for hours, so heading to Snow Monkey Park ❄️ felt like a must. This is home to a troop of wild Japanese macaques who live deep in the forests of Jigokudani valley — and they’re the only monkeys in the world who soak in natural hot springs to stay warm during winters that drop to –10°C. How cool is that?

We were extra lucky to see them today — November can be unpredictable, and sometimes they stay up in the mountains. Such a fabulous experience. 🤍✨

We are thoroughly enjoying our stay in the Nagano area! We did a lovely 8 km, mostly uphill, hike through the sacred trails of Togakushi — where five ancient shrines sit along the base and slopes of Mt. Togakushi. The final 2 km approach to the Upper Shrine is through a breathtaking forest of 400-year-old giants cedars. 🌲✨ Truly stunning.

And yes… we needed to keep an eye out for bears! We didn’t have a bear bell, but thankfully Rod found an app for that. 🐻📱😅

We also visited the legendary Zenkō-ji Temple, founded in the 7th century and over 1,400 years old — one of Japan’s most significant Buddhist temples. ⛩️✨

We wrapped up the day with an amazing meal at the smallest restaurant table ever — the width was smaller than Rod’s or my shoulders! 😂🍜

Back on the bike today and exploring one of Japan’s largest wasabi farms! 🌿🚴‍♀️ Fun fact: real wasabi grows in spring-fed mountain water from the Northern Japan Alps — these crystal-clear streams are what make it so special. 💧

At home, we usually only see wasabi paste… but here, it’s freshly grated and super delicate, with a really short shelf life. And yes, we even tried wasabi ice cream — made with real wasabi and an extra kick on top! 🍦🌱

Even with the cool rain, Kanazawa was absolutely beautiful today. The rain made the fall colours pop. Kenrokuen was quiet and peaceful — perfect for a slow wander.

We also explored the old samurai district and the geisha district, each with their own vibe. Narrow lanes, wooden houses, a glimpse into the past.

Shukkeien Garden was pure serenity 🌿 Tiny bridges, winding paths, and peaceful ponds absolutely stunning. You can spend hours here. The reflections in the water, the perfectly manicured landscapes… it is hard to believe this is in the heart of the city. Japanese really know how to do gardens.

Miyajima Island was a great escape from Hiroshima 💙 We saw the floating torii gate at both low and high tide — you don’t realize how huge it really is until you’re standing right there. It’s quite the sight. Arriving early was the best decision… we had a bit of time before the crowds rolled in.

And the views from Mount Misen? Fantastic! We took the ropeway and tram up, then hiked the rest of the way to the peak — and hiked all the way down. Such an amazing way to experience the mountain. Hazy blue mountains, beautiful forests, endless sea, and a whole new perspective on Japan. Our thighs are going to hurt for a few days 🥾⛰️

If you’re visiting Japan, Miyajima is an absolute must. ✨

Rod eats: Hiroshima okonomiyaki - another WOW food😋🔥
Layered with cabbage, noodles, pork, egg, and that amazing Otafuku sauce… it’s comfort food on a whole new level. Watching it come together on the teppan is half the fun — eating it is the other half 🤤

If you come to Hiroshima, don’t skip this. Trust us.

Hiroshima a city with a heartbreaking past. Walking through Peace Park and standing before the A-Bomb Dome… it’s impossible not to feel the weight of it. Knowing that nearly 200,000 lives — many of them children — were lost, and that almost everything within 2 km was destroyed, hits hard.

Today, the city is just 80 years young, and it’s incredible to see how it’s grown back. Friendly locals, cozy streets, and the best food (Hiroshima okonomiyaki another amazing food find 😋).

Hopefully the world continues to learn from the lessons of the past. 💛

Spent a couple of days wandering around beautiful Kurashiki and cycling through the countryside on the Kibiji Trail 💙 It honestly felt like stepping back in time — strolling past Edo-period canals, white-walled storehouses, and willow-lined streets in the Bikan Historical Quarter.

Kurashiki is very quiet….the perfect little escape from the big cities. And the Kibiji bike trail? We practically had it all to ourselves — stopping wherever we wanted to explore hidden shrines, fields, and quiet corners along the way. Loved every minute 💙

Today we took the train to Nara and wandered through Nara Park, where over 1,000 wild sika deer roam freely. You can buy special deer crackers (shika senbei) to feed them — such a fun experience! Fun fact: the deer in Nara are even designated a national treasure. But the park isn’t just about the deer — there are beautiful temples, shrines, and gardens to explore along the way.

Afterwards, we headed to Fushimi, Kyoto’s famous sake brewing district. The soft water here helps produce some of the world’s best sake. We visited the Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum to learn about the history and, of course, sample different varieties 🍶✨.

Lunch was a hidden gem: a local yakitori restaurant tucked down a quiet street. From the outside it looked calm, but once we slid through the doors, it was buzzing with life — such an amazing meal!

Today we visited the iconic Fushimi Inari Taisha, home to over 10,000 vibrant red torii gates winding 4 km up Mount Inari. Each gate is donated by an individual or business, their names written in black kanji on the back — so cool to see! Even though it’s a popular spot, walking through the endless tunnels of gates and exploring the smaller shrines scattered along the way was absolutely worth it.

In the afternoon, we wandered through Sannenzaka & Ninenzaka — narrow, stone-paved lanes lined with beautifully preserved wooden machiya houses, cozy tea houses, and cute souvenir shops. And just when you least expect it, the five-story Yasaka Pagoda suddenly appears, framing the streets perfectly.

Exploring Kyoto definitely keeps you on your feet — our legs are feeling it as much as after a day of skiing! 🥾✨

A great day exploring Hakone 🍁

We started in Sounzan, riding above the steaming hot springs and drifting clouds on the cable car — the views were absolutely breathtaking and such a refreshing escape from the buzz of Tokyo. 🚠

Then came a boat ride across Lake Ashi, with the iconic red torii gate standing proudly along the shore.

And the best part? Catching glimpses of Mt. Fuji — first on our train ride to Hakone, then again from the top of Sounzan, its peak unfortunately, hiding behind the clouds.

A great day exploring Hakone 🍁

We started in Sounzan, riding above the steaming hot springs and drifting clouds on the cable car — the views were absolutely breathtaking and such a refreshing escape from the buzz of Tokyo. 🚠

Then came a boat ride across Lake Ashi, with the iconic red torii gate standing proudly along the shore.

And the best part? Catching glimpses of Mt. Fuji — first on our train ride to Hakone, then again from the top of Sounzan, its peak unfortunately, hiding behind the clouds.

Our first trip to Japan was supposed to happen back in November 2020… well, that didn’t quite go as planned. But the silver lining? We’re finally here — and we get to spend five amazing weeks exploring this incredible country! ✈️🇯🇵

First stop: Tokyo (東京) — where ancient history meets modern life. It’s a city that never seems to slow down — a mix of centuries-old temples, peaceful parks, and futuristic skyscrapers glowing in neon. In the middle of all the buzz, you’ll suddenly stumble upon a quiet shrine or garden that feels like a completely different world.

A huge part of experiencing Tokyo is just figuring out the rail system — and wow, it’s massive! 1. Stunning Architecture & Landmarks Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is world-renowned and jaw-dropping.
• Modern marvels like the Louvre Abu Dhabi and Qasr Al Watan Palace are both cultural and visual treats.

2. Clean, Safe, Orderly and Well-Organized: The city is extremely clean, crime rates are low, and it’s very tourist-friendly.

3. Unique Cultural Blend
• You experience a rich blend of Emirati heritage and modern luxury, in a vibrant, multicultural environment fueled by rapid growth and a welcoming attitude toward diverse nationalities.

4. Desert Adventures & Nature
• Easy access to desert safaris
• There’s also the Mangrove National Park if you want greenery and kayaking.

Cons:

1. Hot Weather (Especially in Summer)
• From May to September, temperatures can soar above 45°C

2. Cultural Sensitivity
• you need to be mindful of local customs: modest dress in certain areas, no public displays of affection, and alcohol rules.

3. Limited Nightlife
• Nightlife exists but is more subdued. Bars are usually in hotels and can be pricey.

4. Cost
• Abu Dhabi isn’t cheap—luxury comes at a price, low end to average pricing is similar to high end Canadian pricing.

1. Stunning Natural Beauty
Golden beaches, misty mountains, limestone karsts—every landscape feels straight out of a movie.
2. Delicious (and Cheap!) Food
Street food heaven: pho, banh mi, bun cha, fresh rolls. Every region has its own flavors—and it’s all affordable and so good.
3. Rich Culture & History
Temples, French architecture, war history—so much depth and story everywhere you go.
4. Budget Friendly
Mid-range hotels (with breakfast!) for ~$40 CAD/night, modern apartments under $25, and dinner for two (apps, mains, beers) for $16 CAD.
5. The Kindest People
Warm, welcoming, and generous—especially in less touristy areas. It really made the trip.
6. Buzzing Cities and Fantastic Beaches
Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are full of life—night markets, rooftop bars, and nonstop energy. Beaches are everywhere and wonderful.
7. Coffee with a Twist
Drip, egg, coconut… coffee here is a whole thing—best enjoyed while scooter-watching.
8. Safe & Inclusive
Vietnam feels very safe and is welcoming to travelers of all genders, ethnicities, and sexual orientations. Biggest “danger” is the traffic!

The Cons (just a few!):

1. Traffic Madness
Crossing the street = real-life video game. But walk steady, and somehow it works.
2. Sidewalks? Optional.
You’ll weave through scooters, stools, street kitchens, and the occasional mystery hole. Part of the charm.
3. Tourist Spots Can Be A Lot
Places like Ha Long Bay are stunning but can feel overrun. Worth it—but don’t skip the hidden gems.

We’re loving our time here. A beautiful 7km promenade stretches along the beach, perfect for a stroll or just soaking in the atmosphere. The beach is rarely crowded, and the water is absolutely amazing.

Just beyond the shoreline, the city buzzes with life—full of cultural gems, great food spots, and endless cafés serving up Vietnam’s famously funky coffee and tea concoctions. There are also plenty of cool bars to explore. We’re loving our time here. A beautiful 7km promenade stretches along the beach, perfect for a stroll or just soaking in the atmosphere. The beach is rarely crowded, and the water is absolutely amazing.

Just beyond the shoreline, the city buzzes with life—full of cultural gems, great food spots, and endless cafés serving up Vietnam’s famously funky coffee and tea concoctions. There are also plenty of cool bars to explore. What a week! Our great friends from Canada are here, and it’s been so much fun catching up. We kicked things off by greeting them on the beach and spending the day soaking up the sun — such a perfect way to start the visit!

The adventures continued with amazing food and drinks while wandering the charming streets of Hoi An. Even on a not-so-great weather day, we made the most of it with a Coconut Basket Boat tour in Cam Thanh Coconut Village. The basket boats, made from bamboo and waterproofed with coconut oil or tar, are surprisingly stable even in rough waters — perfect for navigating through the lush water coconut palm forest.

When the weather didn’t improve, we pivoted to a euchre tournament — and let’s just say it wasn’t the ladies’ best showing as the boys took the win!

Ba Na Hills is a resort and theme park, something we wouldn’t usually seek out—but we were told it was a must-see, and we’re so glad we went. It’s truly mind-boggling how they managed to build all of this atop a mountain in the jungle, 1,487 meters (4,879 feet) above sea level. The cooler temperatures and stunning views alone make the trip worthwhile.

Originally developed as a French hill resort in the early 20th century, Ba Na Hills has since been transformed into a blend of French colonial charm and Vietnamese culture. The European-style architecture feels almost surreal against the backdrop of lush jungle and towering mountains.

The highlight? Definitely the Golden Bridge—a 150-meter-long pedestrian bridge held up by two massive stone hands. The views of the surrounding mountains and forests are breathtaking.

Even getting there is an experience. Ba Na Hills holds the Guinness World Record for the longest non-stop single-track cable car (stretching over 5,800 meters). The ride offers incredible panoramic views as you glide over waterfalls, dense jungle, and rolling hills.

Ba Na Hills is one of those places that’s hard to describe until you see it for yourself.
