We only had 2.5 days in Abu Dhabi/UAE to get a taste of what it has to offer. With limited time here is our pros and cons list

Pros:

1. Stunning Architecture & Landmarks Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is world-renowned and jaw-dropping.
• Modern marvels like the Louvre Abu Dhabi and Qasr Al Watan Palace are both cultural and visual treats.

2. Clean, Safe, Orderly and Well-Organized: The city is extremely clean, crime rates are low, and it’s very tourist-friendly.

3. Unique Cultural Blend
• You experience a rich blend of Emirati heritage and modern luxury, in a vibrant, multicultural environment fueled by rapid growth and a welcoming attitude toward diverse nationalities.

4. Desert Adventures & Nature
• Easy access to desert safaris
• There’s also the Mangrove National Park if you want greenery and kayaking.

Cons:

1. Hot Weather (Especially in Summer)
• From May to September, temperatures can soar above 45°C

2. Cultural Sensitivity
• you need to be mindful of local customs: modest dress in certain areas, no public displays of affection, and alcohol rules.

3. Limited Nightlife
• Nightlife exists but is more subdued. Bars are usually in hotels and can be pricey.

4. Cost
• Abu Dhabi isn’t cheap—luxury comes at a price, low end to average pricing is similar to high end Canadian pricing.

5. Less “Walking-Friendly”
• The city is quite spread out, and walking between sights isn’t always practical

6. Smoking: still allowed in restaurants and hotels offer smoking floors

As we get ready to head home, we’ve been reflecting on our time in Vietnam—and yep, it stole a piece of our hearts (again). So here it is: our trusty pros & cons list.

Vietnam: The Pros

1. Stunning Natural Beauty
Golden beaches, misty mountains, limestone karsts—every landscape feels straight out of a movie.
2. Delicious (and Cheap!) Food
Street food heaven: pho, banh mi, bun cha, fresh rolls. Every region has its own flavors—and it’s all affordable and so good.
3. Rich Culture & History
Temples, French architecture, war history—so much depth and story everywhere you go.
4. Budget Friendly
Mid-range hotels (with breakfast!) for ~$40 CAD/night, modern apartments under $25, and dinner for two (apps, mains, beers) for $16 CAD.
5. The Kindest People
Warm, welcoming, and generous—especially in less touristy areas. It really made the trip.
6. Buzzing Cities and Fantastic Beaches
Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are full of life—night markets, rooftop bars, and nonstop energy. Beaches are everywhere and wonderful.
7. Coffee with a Twist
Drip, egg, coconut… coffee here is a whole thing—best enjoyed while scooter-watching.
8. Safe & Inclusive
Vietnam feels very safe and is welcoming to travelers of all genders, ethnicities, and sexual orientations. Biggest “danger” is the traffic!

The Cons (just a few!):

1. Traffic Madness
Crossing the street = real-life video game. But walk steady, and somehow it works.
2. Sidewalks? Optional.
You’ll weave through scooters, stools, street kitchens, and the occasional mystery hole. Part of the charm.
3. Tourist Spots Can Be A Lot
Places like Ha Long Bay are stunning but can feel overrun. Worth it—but don’t skip the hidden gems.

We’re loving our time here. A beautiful 7km promenade stretches along the beach, perfect for a stroll or just soaking in the atmosphere. The beach is rarely crowded, and the water is absolutely amazing.

Just beyond the shoreline, the city buzzes with life—full of cultural gems, great food spots, and endless cafés serving up Vietnam’s famously funky coffee and tea concoctions. There are also plenty of cool bars to explore. What a week! Our great friends from Canada are here, and it’s been so much fun catching up. We kicked things off by greeting them on the beach and spending the day soaking up the sun — such a perfect way to start the visit!

The adventures continued with amazing food and drinks while wandering the charming streets of Hoi An. Even on a not-so-great weather day, we made the most of it with a Coconut Basket Boat tour in Cam Thanh Coconut Village. The basket boats, made from bamboo and waterproofed with coconut oil or tar, are surprisingly stable even in rough waters — perfect for navigating through the lush water coconut palm forest.

When the weather didn’t improve, we pivoted to a euchre tournament — and let’s just say it wasn’t the ladies’ best showing as the boys took the win!

There’s something so special about sharing these experiences with friends from home. Ba Na Hills is a resort and theme park, something we wouldn’t usually seek out—but we were told it was a must-see, and we’re so glad we went. It’s truly mind-boggling how they managed to build all of this atop a mountain in the jungle, 1,487 meters (4,879 feet) above sea level. The cooler temperatures and stunning views alone make the trip worthwhile.

Originally developed as a French hill resort in the early 20th century, Ba Na Hills has since been transformed into a blend of French colonial charm and Vietnamese culture. The European-style architecture feels almost surreal against the backdrop of lush jungle and towering mountains.

The highlight? Definitely the Golden Bridge—a 150-meter-long pedestrian bridge held up by two massive stone hands. The views of the surrounding mountains and forests are breathtaking.

Even getting there is an experience. Ba Na Hills holds the Guinness World Record for the longest non-stop single-track cable car (stretching over 5,800 meters). The ride offers incredible panoramic views as you glide over waterfalls, dense jungle, and rolling hills.

Ba Na Hills is one of those places that’s hard to describe until you see it for yourself. It has a Disney-like feel, but it’s impressively well-executed, with a European theme woven seamlessly with Vietnamese culture. Twenty years ago, we visited Ha Long Bay for the first time. It was a two-day journey on an old wooden junk with yellow sails, shared with just 20 people. The experience was magical—peaceful, calm, and surrounded by absolutely stunning scenery. We had never seen anything like it before.

Fast forward to 2025, we decided to return—this time on a day trip—to once again experience this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Unfortunately, some of the magic had faded. Ha Long Bay has become a tourist production line, with large modern boats packed with visitors. At times, the peaceful silence was replaced by loud music, and the once tranquil waters were filled with bumper boats—literally—crowded with people.

That said, if you have never been, we still highly recommend visiting. Hanoi, our first stop, is a crazy busy city that seems to be in a permanent state of functional chaos. It instantly captivated us with its energy. This city is a perfect blend of the historic and the modern, where well-preserved French colonial buildings stand alongside ancient temples and buzzing street life. Having been 20 years since our last visit we had to relearn how to cross the street again as the sea of motorcycles and cars part around you!

We stayed in the Old Quarter, a maze of narrow streets packed with shops, street food stalls, and historical buildings. Right in the heart of it all is Hoàn Kiếm Lake & Ngọc Sơn Temple, a welcome peaceful escape from the city’s nonstop movement.

For a bit of excitement, we checked out Train Street, where you can sip a drink just inches away from a speeding train—it’s an experience that’s as thrilling as it is surreal!

One of the highlights of our time in Hanoi was meeting up with a family member who lives here. PROS

1. Breathtaking Scenery - From towering mountains and lush waterfalls to mysterious caves and the winding Mekong River, Laos is pure natural beauty.

2. Budget-Friendly - Everything from food to accommodations and activities is super affordable.

3. Laid-Back Atmosphere - No pushy vendors, no chaos, just a relaxed, easygoing vibe.

4. Rich Culture & History - Beautifully preserved Buddhist temples, charming villages, and UNESCO-listed sites like Luang Prabang.

5. Endless Adventure - Trekking, zip lining kayaking, tubing, 4x4 motoring, and caving, so much to do for outdoor lovers.

6. Warm & Welcoming Locals - The people here are incredibly friendly, helpful, and genuinely hospitable.

7. Safety - In our experience Laos has been as safe or safer than any other SEA country we have travelled. We absolutely had no concerns.

CONS

1. Getting Around Can Be a Challenge - Public transport is slow, buses can be old, and rural roads are rough. The new China-Laos railway with its high tech, high speed bullet train helps between the major cities, but remote areas still require some effort and patience to reach.

2. Chinese Tourism Boom - Since the new railway opened, around 1,000 Chinese tourists arrive daily. Most of them stick to the main train-accessible destinations, so we would recommend venturing off the easily accessible areas for a more authentic experience.

After a grueling 4.5-hour minibus ride with 11 other travelers—no air conditioning, windows that wouldn’t open in the back, and a driver who seemed to have a side hustle—we finally arrived in Nong Khiaw. This little riverside town in northern Laos, nestled along the Nam Ou River and surrounded by towering limestone mountains, was absolutely worth the journey.

We spent the next three days soaking in the natural beauty—hiking to breathtaking viewpoints, exploring waterfalls, exploring caves that once sheltered locals during the Indochina War, and kayaking along the river. The scenery was nothing short of spectacular!

And the food? Incredible. Two large Beerlao(640ml), crispy spring rolls, a rich massaman curry, and a plate of Pad Lao—all for just $14 CAD! After an exhilarating three days at the Gibbon Experience, we slowed things down with a two-day Slowboat journey from Houay Xai to Luang Prabang. Along the way, we enjoyed breathtaking river views, made a stop in Pakbeng, and took part in a couple of memorable tours. Our accommodations offered stunning views - we wished we had an extra day just to relax by the pool like sloths.

During the trip, we visited a Hmong village, explored the famous Pak Ou Caves, home to over 4,000 Buddha statues, and even learned how to make Lao whiskey. After 30 hours of travel and a crazy temperature swing we have arrived in Laos 🇱🇦. This is our first time in this country and so far loving it! We have been enjoying the laid back vibe of the capital of Vientiane with its many cafes and temples. Of all SEA capitols we have been to this is the most chill. We’re winding down our last couple of days in Malta and getting into the Christmas spirit!

Reflecting on our posts, us along with most people on social media, only show the positives. So we have decided that beginning with Malta, and at the end of each destination going forward, we will do a pros and cons list. This of course will be entirely subjective and based on our own experiences and opinions. With that said here is our Malta pros and cons list:

Pros:
- Stunning coastlines with incredible turquoise waters
- Very safe country to travel
- Very clean
- Some impressive architecture
- Good public transportation network

Cons
- Lack of unique culture, very cosmopolitan with little that is original , a European melting pot.
- High degree of tourism even in low season (a popular cruise port adds to the problem)
- Aside from a few dishes (Pastizzi for example, which is fabulous) there is no real interesting Maltese food. The best food was often French, Italian, Middle Eastern or Indian.
- Not particularly a good value relative to other European countries like Spain and Portugal overall. High costs for visiting tourists sites - ex. 15 euro to enter St. John’s Cathedral

With a great stretch of weather we did a beach day heading to Golden Bay and Ghajn Tuffieha Bay which are two of Maltas most stunning beaches. The two beaches are very different but just a short walk away from each other.
